Best Christmas present ever! I've been painting since about 1998, traditionally a lot of 40k stuff but lately I've been doing a lot of work with Fantasy and the odd little side project here and there. I don't game as much as I'd like, and I don't paint as much as I'd like either... but I make up for this by purchasing way more models than I ought to! I make an effort to try new things once in a while, and every once in a while I'll actually finish something. My current project is the Warriors of Chaos, it's an attempt at doing a 2,000pt army in under 6 weeks for the Fracas tournament here in Edmonton. A $100 ticket should give me motivation to get my army done on time, I would love some tournament trophies to add to my painting awards :-) After that, who knows what I'll be up to! Just thought I'd post a pic of the army (so far) now that I put them back in the display case. Click the image below for the full size (1200 pixel wide) image.
As my little green box of doom has been shown on here before, I can't hide the fact that I have many many many more models to paint. Many of the ones in the green box likely won't see action, but I have more Wardancers, Eternal Guard, another Eagle, and Treekin either purchased or in the mail at the moment. I'll probably bulk out the Wild Riders from 5 to 6-8 eventually, and might even get 5-6 Warhawks eventually. Needless to say, they'll be taking up two shelves before too much longer. ...

Wow that sure wasn't any fun at all... just spent an entire evening fixing models while waiting for various Windows functions to load... the registry collapsed on our family computer. So for all the incredibly complicated ways for the Eagle to break, it picked a really boring one. The cracks in the flying stand completely gave out when I got the model home. So I had to snap off the peg, drill out the part stuck in the base, drill out the belly of the bird, touch up around the drilling, glue on a new peg and do yet more touchups. While I was doing this, I glued magnets to the bases of all the archers so that they can stick to magnetic movement trays. What a fun way to pass the time while repairing horrible Windows errors that inevitably cause new and exciting restart loops. ...

Woohoo, first game of the campaign is a massacre for the Wood Elves! I had to fight Bretonians too, which was making me nervous. In the end, my feint on the right flank with the Wardancers bought me enough time to whittle down the two units of Knights with my Glade Guard archers. In the end the key to victory was stalling him as long as possible. I held him at arm's length for a while and eventually my Wardancers got a chance to get into combat. They soaked a charge admirably using the 4+ Ward dance, and then kicked in the killing blow next turn when they were striking first. After the Knights of the Realm and their Paladin were gone, then they mopped up the Knights Errant that butchered my archers on the far flank. The peasants ran away untouched and my Wardancers dragged home three banners and the heads of two overzealous Bretonian characters. That'll teach them to stay off the grass! ...

Got my Eagle all done up. I'll add some minor static grass to the base later, I'll do one big batch for all the new models. Took longer than I thought to paint this guy, the beak was fun and I added a little reflection on the pupil. I normally don't even try stuff like that with eyes :-)
The magnetic wings worked out well, strangely enough the only thing giving me problems right now is the flying stand. It looks like the plastic is beginning to crack around where I pinned the peg into his belly. Lovely huh? Oh well at least I'll be able to store/transport this guy safely. ...

The primer is currently drying on the eagle, I didn't get a chance to paint him up yet like I wanted to. Silly things like reading assignments and response papers on the second day of class are getting in my way. Oh well I think I actually learned something which is a treat. Anyway I can happily report that the Citadel black spray seems less crappy than the last time I used some. The guys at the shop said that the horrid smell has decreased with the last few batches, and the horribly slow dry times have decreased as well. My initial experience seems to verify this. I sprayed outside my back door at -22C and the paint seems more opaque, less stinky, and I was able to flip the wings and handle the body (carefully!) after about 15 minutes. Not quite the dry time of the older generation spray, but much better than the 60 or more minutes we were having the last few months. ...
