For my first blog post, (since I should get in the habit of rambling) I've decided it should be a brief introduction about myself and what I do. For those of you that don't know me, I am Elizabeth Beckley, and I am a full time professional miniature painter. Yes, this is what I do to pay the bills and I love it! I have currently been painting professionally for a year and a half and currently work in-house at CoolminiorNot as a studio painter. I also do freelance ...

  4. Buckbeak bows

one of several 'live' animatronic features at the Warner Brothers Harry Potter studio tour, the griffon/gryphon from...well, whichever one it was in. Went for a visit there a few days ago with a couple of friends, for one of their birthdays.

Whatever you think of the whole Potter phenomenon, the tour thing is really quite an experience - granted I'm pretty biased by way of being a sculptor/modelmaker, but ...

  6. Unsolicited Review: Pop Sculpture

Hello all! I just got this book Pop Sculpture; how to create action figures and collectible statues the other day and thought I'd share it with you and my thoughts on it. I had read about in in Amazing Figure Modeller and when I had to go on Amazon to get some of my textbooks, I thought it was a good excuse to throw this in there too.
First off, when I looked on the cover's spine I was a bit hesitant- Watson-Guptill books that I've bought in the past have been hit or miss, with emphasis ...
  7. Getting the Shakes

Right, well I've been away from the paints for over a week now and the withdrawal has been dreadful.

I've been in holiday, that thing where you go away and have to have a good time. LIke it or not. I couldn't take my mini's and gear with me so I've just had to withdraw. I took a sci-fi book with me from the Heresey series and as I'm painting Dark Angels it had to be "Descent of Angels". This has duely inspired me, but my anxiety has got so bad recently my shakes are almost uncontrollable. ...
  8. Information Overload...

Okay, so I'm pushing on trying to improve.

I'm pretty sure that my most recent mini I've posted is my best yet, but I just can't get my cameraphone to translate the way the eye does.

I did what I reckon most of us do, and started research. Now the problem I've got is I probably know too much! At least enough to know I haven't got a clue.

This took me back to a conversation I had with my step dad. It was about developing in art, how the only way, in his opinion, ...
  9. Nostalgia...it's not like it used to be!

I've been posting some updated mini's, I find it helpful to respond to the score I'm getting as a way of improving the minatures. IT tells me if I'm going forward in the right direction.

But if there's one thing I know you can't move forward with out checking your mirrors...right? (okay okay cheesey I know).

So I've indulged myself in some Nostalgia. I have an album on my computer of models and minatures from the past few years as I have gradually been able to commit more ...
  10. Starting Again

There's somthing strangely therapeutic about starting again.

When your brush chucks a hair out of place and smears paint across the edge you were highlighting.

    Well....

You just have to start again!

I've just started again, like this blog from that ancient awkward entry back in May 2012 and in my dedication to painting minatures. I don't know if I'll ever be as good as I'd aspire to be, but that's part of the fun of it.

    My friend ...
