A time to sort out some paint and brushes.

The marines and tyranids I mentioned in my earlier blog were my brothers old figures. These came in useful to get a grips on my remaining kit and whatever else I could find laying around at the time.

With the citadel paints I quickly learned that they had changed the names of them all recently and had introduced many new paints in several waves over the last two years. This was something I did not realise at the time I came to buy more as replacements. The funny thing was when I did come to buy new paints I found myself using names like blood red, skull white, etc. It got even worse when I started to ask for bad moon yellow, nauseating blue or deadly nightshade. The shop keeper was able to help me out with some by using a conversion chart from old names of citadel paints to the new names but some I just got a blank stare from the shop keeper. There was no new name for them in the conversion charts so I assumed they had been long discontinued.I was given a conversion chart for the citadel paints in the shop where I now buy my paints from.I certainly feel very very out of touch with this hobby.

Brushes was another surprise.I used to use and love my old citadel brushes. When I spied some in a shop in the next town I just had to purchase a few.The standard brush was always my favourite, but I quickly found that as soon as the tip of the brush touched the paint it forked badly.I tried everthing to try to correct this problem but in the end decided it was just a bad brush.A week later I purchased another one from another shop just to make sure it was not a bad batch the shop had recieved where I brought my first one.Sure enough the same happened with this brush,it forked and quickly developed a small curl on the tip making painting details almost impossible.A citadel drybrush also started to wear quickly and after a dozen models looked as if it had exploded from the inside out.So it came to pass that I very quickly realised that a top brand name in miniatures did not always produce the best brushes for the job in hand.I expect that the old red handled brushes were made by another company compared to the new ones.Research pointed me towards our local art shop where I obtained three new rather expensive windsor and newton series 7 brushes. As yet I have not tried them out but my fingers are itching to play with them.
