I am Yurii Chinenov, aka Skeeve, 35, molecular biologists/biochemists by trade (for now). Currently in New York City and probably will remain.    More things we learned in school... again [24/02 03:19PM]

Every time I write in this category I sincerely hope that it will be the last note, yet, alas our school just begging for more...

My 6th grader, while going through the characteristic features of things living needs to complete "Life Processes Project". The idea is to illustrate 9 process characteristic of living things. (On the side... we are not in kindergarten, you know, kids in 6th grade should be able to WRITE, not to DRAW).

So. I am reading through the list of 9 and all of them makes some sense until I got to a proces #6 (Emphasis is mine)

6. ALL living things are made up of MORE THAN ONE cell.

To those who doesn't know... 50% of this planet biomass is composed of single-cell organisms. I am sure that the person who wrote this, believes that he/she is actually teaching science. You know, this statemet is so incorrect that suggests to me lack of basic undestanding of a subject. Like you know, a person who start the geography class by stating that the Earth is flat.

Well. it could be a definition... :D I became interested as i don't remember the different definitions of life since my biology classes. Then I came across the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life lol look at the picture to the right. Apparently that's life. Probably taken from its photo album. Wonder where else life has been. I would want to meet it one day.

That's possible, but then one has to think how far we could find ourselves with definitions like this. Let's define life as highly organized multicellular structures capable of sophisticated manipulatory activities capable of using tools. It is no better and no less artificial than defining life based on the number of cells in a organism.
